greetings,fellow humans
that title is the name of the song i am listening to as i type, from the album ,expensive shit, my personal favorite from fela kuti & africa 70. i am usually listening to this as i move about outside, and i am actually not capable of keeping still as soon as a song begins. in fact, im almost positive i caught a woman chuckling at me on the subway the other day, as i nodded my head, drummed 'pon my legs and did little mini rhythmic patterns with my feet, all while sitting on a moving train.
i hope you are safe and sound and well on this sunday.
i am supa ,dupa busy, writing and recording two projects, so forgive my absence. i think its more important to give yall the best songs possible than worrying about how often i write on the internet. of course, there are some subjects that light a fire behind my butt and this is one that got me typing, even on super bowl sunday.
over the past two years, i have been doing a live version of bravebird with an ode-to-fela/tony allen extended outro. i then make an attempt at putting to use all those amazing steps i learned from all those dope -ass african dance classes i took as a kid at alvin ailey and with my mom at one of the classes of the wonderful chuck davis. ah, dancing.....
anyway, a couple of weeks ago, my mom treated my family to (gasp) Fela! on broadway, and all i know is, i gotta go back! from the moment we sat down and were treated to LIVE,STELLAR musicianship as the house band played for a good 30 minutes-a ticket worthy show within itself- i could not sit STILL. i am sure i moved for the entire 2 1/2 hours. it was so utterly delicious on a visually level, so stimulating on EVERY level, so revelatory, and sooooooo cool as hell, not trying to be anything or serve anyone yet totally accessible and inviting.... if you aren't pleased on a purely rhythmic level, i think you may be a robot. i saw this in the wake of some ignorant reviews.sometimes the African/Black experience goes over the head of certain folk.sometimes its an uncomfortable, foreign experience, summoning up feelings of guilt or just plain indifference. know what i say?
do yourself a favor: GO SEE IT
(and youtube ain't doing no justice to any live experience of this sort, so don't even GO there:-)
-hope you checked out that website i mentioned called soschildrensvillages.org . they make it easy for you to donate on a monthly basis.
i gotsta go start putting the super bowl treats together for the fam. i hope they are feelin these vegan honey bbq and buffalo wings i found.
be well,always
mel
